Caring for the Caregivers
Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) is a non-profit organization which has worked for 15 years in disaster zones to help mitigate traumatic effects, promote healing, and support the resilience of individuals and communities. In this current pandemic, we are supporting those providing essential services with Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, which has been widely used in China to manage the spread and severity of COVID-19.
Our volunteers are fully debriefed regarding details of herbal and lifestyle recommendations for respiratory, digestive, and general symptoms involved in COVID-19. Detailed case series, round table discussions, and journal articles have been made available in English, and herbal formulas for each presentation and stage of respiratory illness have been recommended by the National Health Commission & State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine official hospital recommendations, Wuhan Union Hospital, and Hubei Provincial Hospital. Although never perfect, and still under investigation using more detailed clinical trials than available during the height of the pandemic in China, these herbal approaches have been shown in thousands of cases to have helped those infected to recover with a reduction in symptoms by focusing on the underlying health of the body.
Through the Caring for the Caregiver program, AWB would like to make herbal medicine available to as many front line health and essential workers as possible. Licensed acupuncturists in Los Angeles have volunteered to offer herbal consultations free of charge to individuals working in vulnerable jobs. We are partnering with herbal companies that have donated herbal supplies for this large scale project.
Through individual telehealth sessions, Licensed Acupuncturists will also provide services such as directed breathing exercises, self-massage acupressure, ear acupressure protocols, dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Acupuncturists Without Borders views this as a virtual field station to help assist our essential workers using the full toolkit of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
